The New
Automation
Skill Set
Today’s automation stack combines agents that can reason through messy work with reliable systems that move data, trigger actions, and keep teams aligned. The most valuable builders are becoming broader: part strategist, part communicator, and part technical operator.

From Tools to Teammates
Automation used to mean writing a script or connecting two systems. That work still matters, but the landscape has expanded. Agentic tools such as ChatGPT at Work and Claude Cowork can help research, draft, summarize, plan, and work through ambiguity alongside a team. They are useful precisely because business work is rarely neat or fully specified.
The opportunity is not to hand every decision to an agent. It is to design a clear role for it. A well-directed agent can turn a meeting into a first project plan, prepare a client brief from scattered notes, or help a team explore options before a decision is made. The human still sets context, checks judgment, and owns the outcome.
Automation, AI Strategy

Pair Judgment With Determinism
The most effective systems pair those flexible agents with deterministic tools such as n8n, Power Automate, Retool, and the platforms already inside the business. These tools excel at repeatable work: moving approved data, notifying the right people, updating records, routing requests, and enforcing a reliable sequence of steps.
That pairing creates a useful division of labor. An agent can interpret an incoming request, propose the right next step, or produce a usable draft. A deterministic workflow can then validate inputs, create the record, send the notification, and log the result. One side handles ambiguity; the other makes the process dependable.
Build Faster, Think Broader
AI coding assistants make the creation layer faster as well. They can accelerate prototypes, integrations, internal tools, and the small custom pieces that connect a workflow end to end. But speed alone is not the differentiator. The valuable builder knows which problem is worth solving, what data should be trusted, where review is required, and how the experience will land with the people using it.
That is why the skill set is changing. Modern automation work requires technical literacy, but also business awareness and strong communication. The best people can map a process, ask sharper questions, explain tradeoffs plainly, and turn a team’s goals into systems that actually get adopted. Development is no longer only about building the thing. It is about connecting people, decisions, and tools into a way of working that moves the business forward.
